1891 - the Ames Plant - the first electrical generator - exerpted from the Denver Post

1904 - the Rankine Plant of the Canadian Niagara Power Company - the earliest station still operating

1921 - the Queenston-Chippewa Plant - later renamed the Beck I plant of Ontario Hydro
This Ontario provincial power utility has been restructured into separate entities:
- the generating company Ontario Power Generation
- the service company Hydro One
- the research company Kinectrics
- the Independent Electricity Market Operator.

1968 - the formation of the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) to promote the reliability of the electricity supply for North America.
